Cambridgeshire Darts Organisation Press Release

13/05/2013

Dear All,

As most of the sporting world saw Sir Alex Ferguson walk onto the Old Trafford pitch, the words rung out and were posted around the stadium of "The Impossible Dream" and that was exactly what we faced as we travelled to Nottinghamshire in the final BDO Division One Inter-County match.

With two spaces available for promotion to the Premier Division (Gwent were barring a disaster guaranteed one of them), we went into the match in third place, but nine points behind second place Nottinghamshire and with teams just below us looking to have potentially easier matches, so we had to keep an eye on them as well if we could get ourselves in a good position.

Saturday saw our Ladies B team start the weekend top of their table, knowing that a 4-2 win would secure them their title, the results were :

Set Player Nottinghamshire Player Cambridgeshire Legs Won  Sets Won
  Av Name Av Name H A H A
1 18.11 Kirsty Handford 13.35 Fiona Coker 3 0 1 0
2 17.33 Margaret Bamford 18.11 Liz Humphries 0 3 0 1
3 18.19 Julie Pipe 18.65 Amy Grant 2 3 0 1
4 17.41 Julie Pitchfold 22.77 Sandra Greatbatch 0 3 0 1
5 13.42 Nicola McNamara 12.27 Debbie Melton 3 0 1 0
6 16.70 Jenny Whatmough 16.68 Ronnie Johnson 1 3 0 1
              2 4

As always in these cases it is nerve wracking experience but when Ronnie Johnson took out eight to win her match, the pressure was lifted as we knew the title was secure, it turned out to be a comfortable victory as we won the title by two clear points.

Amy Grant had the best finish as she took out 100 and the Match Award went to Ladies Captain, Sandra Greatbatch.

So it was onto the Mens B team match and this has been the one team that have struggled this season and despite a promising start they slipped to another 4-8 defeat that means they finished bottom of their table, results were :

Set Player Nottinghamshire Player Cambridgeshire Legs  Won Sets  Won
  Av Name Av Name H A H A
1 20.65 Neil Lawton 25.47 Eddie Martin 0 3 0 1
2 22.22 Trevor Ellis 21.86 Trevor Whitby 1 3 0 1

4 25.58 Richard Cooper 23.63 Simon Cassidy 3 2 1 0
5 26.54 Brian Kirk 20.99 Tom Stevens 3 1 1 0
6 20.09 Wes Deane 21.49 Darren Cotterell 2 3 0 1
7 24.99 Mark Wilson 22.86 Adam Cousins 3 1 1 0
8 29.47 Chris Hill 20.92 Martin Purell 3 0 1 0
9 23.73 Neil Ward 21.25 Paul Hilsden 3 1 1 0
10 24.70 Graham Cook 25.15 Alex Topper 2 3 0 1
11 26.37 Marc Dewsbury 21.42 Gary Flynn 3 0 1 0
12 21.78 Richard Palmer 21.38 Carl Dockerill 3 0 1 0
              8 4

Eddie Martin took the Match Award in the first game, he also had a 180 along with Trevor Whitby and Tom Stevens. Paul Newstead had a 116 shot out.

This left us trailing 8-10 overnight and knowing that we needed to pick up 14 points out of 18 in the A team matches on Sunday, whilst nothing is impossible, it was getting pretty close.

The main thing to achieve on Sunday was at least a draw in the Ladies A team match that would see them emulate the Ladies B team as Champions. The results were :

Set Player Nottinghamshire Player Cambridgeshire Legs Won  Sets Won
  Av Name Av Name H A H A
1 16.92 Margaret Bamford 21.30 Barbara Greatbatch 1 3 0 1
2 17.24 Kelly Stevens 16.46 Nadine Bentley 3 1 1 0
3 19.63 Sara Faulkner 21.67 Claire Ball 1 3 0 1
4 18.94 Helen Harvey 22.43 Amanda Mallett 0 3 0 1
5 18.26 Lesley Allick 18.26 Karen Stanhope 2 3 0 1
6 16.57 Nicola McNamara 16.57 Jane Judges 2 3 0 1
              1 5

Despite some tense times the victory was secured when Amanda Mallett hit her winning double going out from 41and also secured the Match Award and also securing the teams only 180. A 5-1 win saw them ease to their title, in fact they finished four points clear of the second team.

This now meant that we needed to win 9-3 in the Mens A team to give ourselves a chance of promotion, an 8-4 win would see it going down to legs and we were behind so realistically we needed nine.

By this point the pressure had become immense on Nottinghamshire (they knew they needed 5 wins to be ahead of us) and we had the perfect start to keep that pressure on as we took the opening five games before Nottinghamshire took two of the next three. So at 6-2 to us, both sides needed three of the last four games.

The momentum was in our favour as we took the next three games before they took the final game of the day. The results were :

Set Player Nottinghamshire Player Cambridgeshire Legs  Won Sets  Won

1 24.55 Tom Allies 23.93 Mick Reed 1 4 0 1
2 24.41 Chris Hill 23.74 Alex Topper 3 4 0 1

11 27.15 Andy McCracken 25.54 Will Harwood 1 4 0 1
12 25.07 David McGarry 22.20 Mark Horspool 4 1 1 0
              3 9

The win turned out to be enough to give the Mens A runners up in their division, the Match Award went to Martin Adams. There were 180's from Mick Reed, Paul Wenn, Dennis Harbour x 2 and Martin Adams x 2. The best shots out came from Paul Wenn 100 and Gary Robertson 108.

After a tense few minutes waiting for other results it was confirmed that we had finished second in the overall table and therefore claimed a place back in the Premier Division.

The final table is :

Dear All,

The final match of the BDO British Inter-County Division One match will be played this coming weekend when we travel to Hucknall to take on Nottinghamshire.

After a mixed season we still have a chance of gaining promotion back to the Premier Division as you can see from the table below, however we will need to beat Nottinghamshire by a score of at least 24-15 to stand a chance and even then we would not be guaranteed a place in the top two places to be promoted.

Division One Promotion Table
No County MA WA MB WB BP TP +/-
1 Gwent 56 24 50 28 19 177 59
2 Nottinghamshire 53 23 54 28 16 174 57
3 Cambridgeshire 52 32 38 30 13 165 45
4 Hampshire 41 28 53 25 16 163 -15
5 Cornwall 45 23 55 26 11 160 6
6 Dorset 38 19 55 27 9 148 -22
7 County Durham 43 29 40 24 8 144 -52
8 West Midlands 52 20 44 19 7 142 -7
9 Staffordshire 55 17 48 13 8 141 -29
10 Derbyshire 45 25 43 20 6 *137 -42

Whilst the overall table will need everything to go our way both our Ladies teams very much have their destiny in their own hands as they go into the match sitting top of their respective tables, see below.

Our Ladies A need a draw on Sunday to secure their title, whilst the Ladies B need a 4-2 win to guarantee their title on Saturday. However this is based on their nearest rivals winning 6-0, so less points might still be enough.

Meanwhile the Mens teams will be trying to finish the season off with the form that has seen their results improve over the last couple of matches, the Mens A team have had a reasonably good season, apart from the freak 0-12 defeat against the West Midlands, whilst the Mens B, who have been unbeaten for three games will be looking for another win that could see them climb off the bottom spot.

15/04/2013

Our final home match of the season in Division One saw us take on top of the table Hampshire who started the weekend 15 points clear of us.

Our Ladies B team were the first in action and they were top of their table by three points, Captain Sandra Greatbatch lead the way in the opening game and with it took the Lady of the Match Award, but unfortunately only Ronnie Johnson managed a win and the team lost for the first time this season.

The Mens B team have had a bad time of it and were effectively bottom of their table and were facing a Hampshire team that were unbeaten so far this season, but probably for the first time this season they showed their true form and they recorded a fantastic 9-3 win.

Eddie Martin took the Match Award on his return to County action after missing a couple of matches, there were 180’s scores from Eddie Martin, Alex Topper, Simon Cassidy, Terry Redhead and Steve Carrett, there were also high shots out from Simon Cassidy 105, Steve Carrett 109 and Kelvin Crane 116.

The Ladies A went into their match joint top of the table with Hampshire, so they knew they were in for a hard match, but on the day our Ladies showed the form that we hope will earn them a deserved title as they overpowered Hampshire 5-1.

They showed their true fighting spirit as three of them were trailling in their respective matches but still managed to come back and gain a win. The Match Award went to Jane Judges.

The Mens ‘A’ team went into the match determined to finish their home season with a more memorable performance after suffering a disastrous 0-12 defeat last time at home and also add to the overall points tally as by this stage we were leading 16 – 8.

And after Hampshire took the opening game our Men produced the goods and emulated the Mens B team with a brilliant 9-3 win, Dennis Harbour had a very impressive game winning with a 30.63 average but the best performance was in the final game of the weekend as Ian Withers took the Man of the Match Award with a scintillating 33.54 average. Ian’s winning legs were 13,14, 15 & 17 dart legs and it was to prove to be the highest average in Division One and the second highest in the Country.

There were 180’s from Dennis Harbour x 2, Mick Reed x 2, Paul Wenn x 3, Gary Flynn, Will Harwood, Steve Carrett and Ian Withers, the best shots out were Gary Robertson 120 & 102 and Paul Wenn 125.

So we finished with a 28-11 victory over the team that started the weekend top of the table and we now actually sit two points ahead of them in the overall table :

As you can see from the overall table above we have moved up to second place (the top two teams are promoted to the Premier Division), however there are still postponed matches to be played before the last match of the season and it would seem that Gwent will probably be top of the table as they have to play Derbyshire in their 8th match.

Our final match of the season is away to Nottinghamshire on 11/12 May, we will need a big win to stand any chance of regaining a place in the Premier next season, however as you can see from the tables below both our Ladies teams have great chances of winning their respective leagues as they will go into the match top of both tables.

08/04/2013

This coming weekend we play our 8th out of the 9 matches in the Division One campaign when we play our final home match of the season against table topping Hampshire, our final match is against second place Nottinghamshire so two wins would still give us a chance of promotion.

Division One Promotion Table

However our best chance of success is definitely in the Ladies where both our Ladies are currently top of their respective tables.

The Ladies A are level on points with Hampshire, but we lead the table because we have more wins, whilst the Ladies B are three points clear of second placed Nottinghamshire.

Play starts at 12 noon on Saturday and 11am on Sunday, with the normal 4 entry fee payable at the door on the day.

Going back to the British Internationals, it was a good weekend for Cambridgeshire players as Amanda Mallett made a winning debut for England, Claire Ball won one of her two games, as did Martin Adams as England took both the Ladies and Mens titles.

Martin was Man of the Match against Wales and he also took the Man of the Tournament award.

Regards,

Peter Melton
Chairman

First of all please accept my apologies for not sending you a preview of our match against Derbyshire, which we have played this weekend.

Anyway the weekend was a good win for us as the final score was Derbyshire 16 Cambridgeshire 23

There was a promising start to the Ladies B match as both Karen Stanhope and Sandra Greatbatch averaged over 20 per dart in their wins with Sandra taking the match Award, however Amy Grant was our only other winner and so the teams unbeaten record was maintained with a 3-3 draw.

The story of the weekend was a first win of the season for the Mens B team, recalled Martin Purell (Comrades B) started the ball rolling with a Match Award winning performance. And the lead was extended to 3-1 with wins from Tom Stevens and Adam Cousins, but Trevor Whitby was the only winner in the following five games to see us then trail 4-5.

However wins from Steve Carrett, Kelvin Crane and Simon Cassidy in the final three games saw us get that magical win.

Martin Purell and Steve Carrett had 180’s and Steve also had a 104 shot out.

The Mens A were looking to put behind the disastrous 0-12 loss last time and this was achieved with a 8-4 win, which to be truthful after losing the first game was never in doubt.

Martin Adams took another Match Award helped with 2 x 180’s, Ian Withers also had 2 x 180 and there was one from Mark Horspool.

The weekend was difficult in some ways as last minute changes had to be made as due to the weather and illness some players were not able to travel.

We hope we have improved our position in the table, but unfortunately due to one result not being sent in we are still waiting for the tables.

Regards,

Peter Melton - Chairman

The weekend saw us back in action in the BDO Division One league with a home fixture against West Midlands at the GER Club, March.

After a great win away to Staffordshire we were hoping to build on that result, but as you can see below it turned out to be a disaster, especially for the men, whilst our ladies continue to shine.

The Ladies B team actually trailed 1-3 but two good wins from Amy Grant and Sandra Greatbatch, with Sandra taking the Match Award secured a draw.

It meant the team kept their unbeaten record for the season and still sit top of their respective table.

In contrast the Mens B were still looking for their first win of the season, and the search still goes on as they lost 4-8.

Adam Cousins took the Match Award in the final game of the day, helped by 2 x 180 scores.

The Ladies A also started the day top of their respective table and yet another 4-2 win see’s them maintain that place as we enter the last third of the season.

Current England International, Claire Ball took yet another Match Award, just beating Barbara Greatbatch by 0.03.

By the time the Mens A took to the stage we trailed 11-13 , but it was just a bad day all round and for the first time in County history we lost 0 – 12.

There were however 180’s from Mick Reed x 3, Gary Flynn, Mark Horspool, Gary Robertson and Martin Adams.

Whilst the table looks reasonably good, you have to take into effect that some of the teams just behind us still have a game to catch up, so in truth a mid table position would be a true reflection.

Our next match is in three weeks when we travel to Derbyshire.

Our next Division One fixture will see us play West Midlands at March GER on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd March.

We will be trying to build on the fine 25-14 win against Staffordshire. We need a strong finish to the season to stand any chance to finish in the top two teams and thereby get promoted back into the Premier Division, but as you can see from the table below our position at second in the table is not a true one as several of the teams just below us still have to play there matches that were cancelled due to the bad weather in January.

West Midlands include Jamie Hughes who has just been called up for the 2013 England squad, they also include Ian Jones who is a former England player.

Play starts at 12.00 on Saturday for the B teams and 11.00 on Sunday for the A teams. Entry is just 4 for the whole weekend.

There is also a lot to play for in three of the four team tables, see below where we are top of both Ladies A and B and also the Mens A, unfortunately the Mens B are currently bottom of their table.
